At first I tried the Kaplan, Barron's and Princeton Review books, but this by far is the best book if you want to do well. You will probably need to buy Barron's GRE exam book to get basic review of math or the Kaplan GRE exam workbook if you are a little rusty. But after reviewing these books, definitely get this one. I have gone over this book for the past four weeks and my math skills have dramatically improved. The other brands may get you to an average score but this book will definitely get you scoring highly (700+). I took a practice test last week and did very poorly and in just a week of intense review of this book (timing myself rather than just going through the book slowly to understand the concepts) my score has gone up by 100 points! I hope to keep improving since I have yet to master every concept in this book, but I believe that with each concept I master my score will definitely improve. --greyay

To review for the math section of the GRE, I used this book as well as the Cliffsnotes Math Review for Standardized Tests, and the math review sections of the Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's general GRE review books.If I had to buy review materials again, I would purchase this book over the Cliffnotes book (although both were excellent) because it contains a few more math concepts and provides more challenging problems. In addition, I would purchase one of the general books in order to learn a few tricks or shortcuts for the math section, as this book contains how to do math problems "the long way".This book will give you the most thorough review of math concepts for the GRE. I was able to finish it in a month studying about three hours per day. The problems require you to think critically about the approach you want to take. I would say over half of them would be considered "hard" questions on the GRE.A hint for using this book: the introductory discussion about the topic in the beginning of each section will give you a starting point, but the real meat of the lesson is the explanations of each problem in the back of the chapter. The majority of my study time was spent analyzing the different approaches they showed in the answer key. If you only read the concept summary in the beginning, you are missing most of the lesson!If you are shooting for a score in the 85th percentile or above, I'd recommend this book. If below, I'd stick with Cliffnotes Math Review--this book will just frustrate you.

I bought this book as one of my final purchases for my GRE prep. It had been very highly rated and I needed a more intensive math review after purchasing GRE for Dummies, Cracking the GRE by Princeton and the Barrons 800 High Frequency Word List. The fact that the book separates the question levels of difficult is one of the better aspects of the book. The sheer number of questions to practice with is also very helpful.However, there are still numerous flaws that left me unsatisfied. I found the reviews of many concepts to be lackluster at best, giving questions in the medium or hard sections with no preemptive preparation in the review part of the section. Also, I found numerous questions to be tediously full of problems that need more time to work on than should be necessary for a GRE question. Also, I found the types of questions themselves, while helpful to concept practice, not at all written in the same manner as the GRE questions you can typically find in the PowerPrep or in a Princeton book.The math section on the GRE is all about tricks, traps and simple ways to solve problems. Many solutions offered in the answer sections provide complex if not completely unnecessary solutions - adding extra variables where no variable really need be added, for example. They show complex ways of solving QC problems with a D answer that need only basic logic to prove as a D.Lastly, I feel a math book for the GRE should be teaching you how to do the least amount of math in your 45 minutes and how to immediately spot a trap. This book only minimally mentions traps and tips to find them.

I purchased this book because of the excellent reviews, and after a week of using it, I understood the hype.To provide a bit of a back story, I took the GRE in 2011 using a Kaplan prep book, which I admit I thumbed through only a bit. I was a junior in college and took the GRE without a real motivating factor. I took it because I thought I should. My approach that year was the approach of many: how do I cheat the system? My lack of motivation and seriousness resulted in a less than stellar quant score. Today, two years later, I planned to actually RELEARN math principals. No "mastering" the test, I planned to master math as best I could.As the author suggests, this book has become my math bible over the past month. While I am keeping my expectations realistic (I don't expect to obtain a perfect quat score), I feel MUCH better prepared and confident to answer many of the questions the test will throw at me tomorrow afternoon. I bought this book along with the ETS guide, and the 5lb book of GRE practice problems. I have barely touched the other two (except to review the verbal and writing sections). This book has followed me to work, to the library, to the coffee shop, to my boyfriends... Here are some pros and cons about this book:Pros:- Sections by subject (e.g. geometry, coordinate geometry, exponents and roots, averages)- Each section has a comprehensive subject review written in a "need to know" and concise manner- Each section has formulas (e.g. circumstance, distance of a line, slope) in bold you can easily compile and memorize.- Each practice question's solution is explained in depth, and you will quickly learn that this book teaches you UNIVERSAL approaches to a verity of questions. You see that the GRE is much more about the approaches and skills you use to solve a problem, rather than very specific math knowledge.Cons:- You will need to warm up to the author's explanation of answers. If you haven't done math in awhile, you will likely have to refresh on common principals such as simplify and factoring equations. At first you might feel lost when reading answer explanations, and if you're like me, you may have to read them 5-10 times before you understand the logic. It is not uncommon for the author to leave out 1 or more steps. Don't worry, you will quickly learn the author's logic and this problem improves.Overall, excellent book that I plan to recommend to future GRE-ers!

Overall, this was a good book but I had to periodically stop. It was mostly well-written but with a few concerns. When Chris and Chrissy surfaced, heart wrenching to imagine what was going on, there was dialogue about Chatterton intubating (high level of respiratory support) one of the victims. Not to take anything away from the seriousness of the situation, there is verbiage that Chatterton was an anesthesiologist. He was not. He was a combat medic in Vietnam. Legally, he did not have the licensure to intubate. There was a Registered Nurse on the ship during this fateful episode and with specific training, she may have been certified to intubate, but not Chatterton. It doesn't change the end result but it's not accurate.Another interesting point was it appeared that the Rouse's prided themselves on preparing for a dive. Page after page, the reader knows how well they prepare for a dive - redundancy of gear, diving plan, etc. - they went into a dive prepared for problems. However, I don't understand why the boat wasn't prepared to handle someone who gets severely bent. To call for an emergency evacuation and wait? I've done sport diving and have no desire to place myself in a situation where there are no contingency plans. There are portable decompression chambers that can be placed on boats - should have been one in this situation. All boats who serve as a dive platform for deep dives should have one. I could not operate a boat who served as a dive platform for deep dives, in good conscious, without one.My heart breaks to think what these guys were thinking when they surfaced. They knew.

This was a good and interesting read, but read Shadow Divers first. If the story of the U-Boat and the whole field of wreck diving interests you, this book is a good follow-up. It kind of jumps around a bit from the father and son to the author and spends a lot of time on the history and technical aspects of diving, but, as said, if that interests you then it is a good read. It will also save you a lot of money in that if you are normal, you will have no interest in ever diving deep - very much like 'Into thin Air' dissuades you from every wanting to climb Everest ;-).

The Last Dive: A Father and Son's Fatal Descent into the Ocean's DepthsAlthough the outcome of the story is a very sad one, Bernie Chowdhury does an excellent job at bringing you into the lives of his friends and making you feel like you knew them. he explains things pretty clearly and even helps non-divers understand more technical aspects. his descriptiveness makes you feel like you're right there with them. this is an excellent book and it was hard to put it down. Chris and Chrissy are two of my newest heroes and this story helped spur me back into Diving action. i highly recommend this book for anyone, diver or not.

A gripping and engaging story. The writing is so detailed that you are transported to the scene of the events. Towards the beginning of the book, I wasn't really digging Chris and Chrissy and their competitiveness. But as I got further and further into the book, I found that I really liked this family, I wished that I could get the chance to meet these colorful individuals, and I really did want them to survive their last dive, although I already knew the outcome. I learned a lot from their mistakes, but even more from their experiences. Bernie Chowdhury did an excellent job telling the tale of these two larger than life individuals.

This is a thrilling and readable book. It is a good adventure story with a human touch, and an interesting description of the earlier days of technical diving in the US. Technical diving is the type of diving where divers venture deeper than is typically done in recreational dives, and where they explore caves and wrecks. Such dives involve far more advanced training, planning and gear and much more risk than the usual dive on a sunny coral reef in the Caribbean would. The main protagonists of this book, the Rouses, father and son, engage in both cave and wreck diving, while living out their extroverted, prank-loving, bickering characters at the same time. The book's author, Bernie Chowdhury, was a personal friend of theirs and gives a colorful description of their adventures under water and social encounters in the world of diving.The books ends with the Rouses' death on a wreck laying in deep water off the US East coast. At this point, it turns from a description of exciting adventurous dives and the often hilarious attics of this father-son team into a stomach-clenching description of a fatal accident. It is essentially a study on how NOT to conduct any type of advanced diving: the Rouses' big egos made them take undue risks in poor conditions and they saved money on improved breathing gases, the Helium - air mixes reducing the narcotic effects of nitrogen that can cast a thick fog over a diver's mind. Rather they decided to dive using regular - at this depth highly narcotic - air. The younger Rouse then got stuck in the tight interior of the wreck (due to the strong nitrogen narcosis at that depth hallucinating that he was being swallowed by a monster) and after a rescue effort by his father, they failed to locate the tanks necessary for a slow ascent. The sprint to the surface did not allow their bodies to get rid of the dissolved gasses absorbed in the high-pressure conditions at depth, and both of them perished. Naturally, hindsight is 20/20, and I certainly feel empathy for them and how they died a horrible panicked painful death. Nevertheless, I believe that this story was clearly not an unforeseeable tragedy, but serves as a prime example of how a series of poor judgments and decisions will amplify the already large risks inherent in deep and wreck diving. May others learn from them!

Dr. Gary Gibbons' professional expertise can be divided into two fields: investing and corporate finance. He has extensive experience in portfolio management, securities valuation, financial modeling, and financial planning and evaluation in entrepreneurial firms. He has served on the boards of many public and non-public firms as well as various charitable and quasi-governmental organizations. In his capacity as board member he has often fulfilled the role of chairman of the finance committee or chief financial officer. Additionally, he has served as an expert witness or expert consultant in numerous legal proceedings; these have been applied in support of specific valuation, tax, or regulatory positions, in civil litigation, and in support of arbitration or mediation proceedings. He has served as an expert consultant to the SEC with respect to a variety of valuation, fiduciary, and procedural issues. Dr. Gibbons earned his PhD in business administration―with emphasis in strategy and finance―at Claremont Graduate School of the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management. He received his MS in business administration from California State University, and he earned his BS in business administration at the University of Arizona. He is currently the Academic Director of the Thunderbird Private Equity Center.

Dr. Robert D. Hisrich is the Bridgestone Chair of International Marketing and Associate Dean of Graduate and International Programs at Kent State University and president of H&B Associates, a marketing and management consulting firm he founded. He is the former Garvin Professor of Global Entrepreneurship and Director of the Center for Global Entrepreneurship at Thunderbird School of Global Management. Dr. Hisrich received his MBA and PhD degrees from University of Cincinnati and honorary doctorate degrees from Chuvash State University (Russia) and the University of Miskolc (Hungary). He has authored or co-authored 38 books, including Technology Entrepreneurship: Creating, Capturing, and Protecting Value, Second Edition (with Thomas N. Duening and Michael A. Carlos M. DaSilva has widespread experience in entrepreneurship and the startup ecosystem. He is the Director of the Founder Institute Portugal, the world’s largest early stage startup accelerator, with over 1,000 graduate companies across six continents. Dr. DaSilva is responsible for the mentoring dozens of technology entrepreneurs every year. He is frequently invited to lecture on topics related to entrepreneurship, as well as participate in the jury of various startup competitions. Dr. DaSilva held the positions of visiting scholar at the Thunderbird School of Global Management and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Defining algebra originally as a collection of techniques for determining unknowns, the authors trace the development of these techniques from geometric beginnings in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and classical Greece. They show how similar problems were tackled in Alexandrian Greece, in China, and in India, then look at how medieval Islamic scholars shifted to an algorithmic stage, which was further developed by medieval and early modern European mathematicians. With the introduction of a flexible and operative symbolism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, algebra entered into a dynamic period characterized by the analytic geometry that could evaluate curves represented by equations in two variables, thereby solving problems in the physics of motion. This new symbolism freed mathematicians to study equations of degrees higher than two and three, ultimately leading to the present abstract era.

A beautifully told story of a young girl who gets caught up in a Japanese legend. Reminded me a bit of Spirited Away to begin with and then took off in another direction. Would love if she wrote another book about Saki and her new friend, Maeda. The artwork by Alexander Jansson is beautiful, as usual.

I adore the premise of this book, which the author's agent described as "Studio Ghibli-esque" (what magic words!) and I set down to devour The Night Parade as soon as it was released. It is truly a wonderful read, especially for fans of Japanese folklore and Shinto Buddhism. I'm looking so forward to what the author pens next!

This story was like a fable...doing something that teaches you a lesson. I was interesting how the author brought the characters to life.

The book was very well written and held my interest until the very end. I would purchase this book for gifts and would love to seeit in the school libraries throughout the country.

It held a lot of promise from the blurb and coverâ€¦ but I found it a rather slow paced and long winded tale that took a long time to actually get on with the story.To give it to the book some positives â€“ as it deserves them â€“ I did love the setting, story concept and plot. It was well written and painted a vivid picture for the reader. It was just a slow read for me.I do wonder if the fault lay with this particular reader? As much as I enjoy YA workâ€¦ perhaps this was a little too young for me and that is where the main fault lies? Then again, I canâ€™t see my almost eleven year old enjoying the book either as the paces was very slow and I feel she would grow bored of it and not finish. I could be wrong, but to me the slow pace really killed it for me.From the amount of positive reviews others have given this book, I really do feel I just didnâ€™t gel with it as much as I hoped and do hope others get more out of it if they choose to read it.Would I recommend this book to others? Possibly. Because of the unique setting and theme I know a lot of young girls my eldest daughterâ€™s age who might like to give it a read as they enjoy a lot of the old Japanese tales. But I would worry they would give up half-way through as it takes so long to get anywhereâ€¦ so not too sure.Would I buy this book for myself? Sadly no. It held a lot more promise than what it actually delivered. I commend the author and publisher for producing such a unique taleâ€¦ I just wish it wasnâ€™t so sluggish in its pace.In summary: A well written, if not slow paced story. Possibly better suited for a younger mind as the setting, plot and descriptions deserve a big thumbs up. This book was just not for me.

Which is to say, she was an almost unlikeable little brat. Which while realistic, wasnâ€™t much fun to read about. Luckily, once the curse came into play, she started to grow up a bit.I loved the kitsune the best of the three spirit guides Saki met. And I liked the tanuki the least. Which was kind of amusing because the kitsune tells Saki that everyone likes the third spirit (the tanuki) the best once theyâ€™ve met them. I didnâ€™t dislike him, I just liked the kitsune and the tengu better.I also really liked Sakiâ€™s grandmother. Her parents and brother didnâ€™t speak to me one way or the other, but the grandmother made me wish weâ€™d gotten to know more about her. The various spirits Saki meets were interesting, and I loved that there were a number of different types. From Kappa and Ogres, to objects that had been around long enough to earn themselves a soul.I liked Saki by the end of the book, and Iâ€™m glad she managed to make a human friend. Though I do wonder what happened with her friends back in Tokyo. There was a plot thread that never did get resolved there.There were a lot of Japanese folklore and myths that came to life in this book. Nothing I hadnâ€™t heard of before, but Iâ€™m also a folklore addict. For those of you who arenâ€™t, there will most likely be quite a few things new to you in this book.3.5 Stars(cross-posted to my blog)
